Appeal to emotion

The idea of an appeal to emotion is that it is an argument that is a premise that basically says that you should believe or do something just because you feel a certain way. The type of appeal to emotion that strikes me the most is appeal to pity. Appeal to pity means that you are doing something just because you feel sorry for someone. The appeal strikes me the most out of all the other appeals because it is the type of appeal that a lot of people in our world use today. Even in small cases, people are still using the appeal to pity when they do not even know it. Sometimes big organizations even use it as well. Some organizations like Greek organizations use the appeal to pity all the time. In some cases they will want to do a fundraiser for their brothers or sisters just because they do not have the money to pay for their own dues. In reality some of the sisters or brothers who participate in the fundraiser do not even want to participate in the fundraiser but they only do it because they feel sorry for them.

  1. I agree with you the appeal to pity is a common one. We act out of pity because we believe or feel a certain way. I find myself acting this way plenty of times wherever I go whether it is at the supermarket or even driving down the streets seeing homeless people on the side asking for change. Appeal of pity is so common because people tend to feel sorry for someone else because they are less fortunate than they are. I also agree that this appeal strikes small cases like an individual or as large as a fraternity or sorority.

  2. Wow those Greek organizationa are really helpful. I agree that appeal to pity is common for people to use throughout their life. Like personally I have used many appeals to pity. For example, on Easter I went to by best friends house and her grandma rushed over to me telling me how she made her special jello that she knew I loved. Well I hate jello but I felt so bad that she made it thinking I loved it. So, out of pity i ate two whole cups of jello she handed me. i tried to tell my best friend to help me out and hide the jello from her grandma but she was busy hosting her families Easter party.

  3. I really enjoyed reading your post. It seems like you know what you are talking about. I as well talked about appeal to pity as being the most striking out of all the types of emotions. There are many ways people use pity. But the main purpose is to get something they want by connecting with people on an emotional level. You used some good examples, however, I disagree with your Greek example. Being part of a fraternity I do not feel that people use pity to get money for dues in any way whatsoever. Overall though this post was effective.
