vague sentences
#2
A vague sentence is when a sentence is unclear and most of the time it just goes straight to the point, rather then describing or wording it out better. Vague sentences tend to be common for many people. Sometimes we do not even realize or notice that we are using vague sentences in our essays, or when we are speaking to other people. When I went to the grocery store with my mom she was asking me what I really wanted to buy for school. I replied to her by saying, “I want bread.” After thinking it over I realized that the statement that I said to my mom was too vague. She told me that she did not understand what exactly I meant. She was not sure of what kind of bread I wanted for school. My reply to my mom qualifies as a vague sentence because I didn’t specify whether or not I wanted, wheat bread, white bread, sourdough, etc.
I like your example of a vague sentence. I know it is a simple one but it is obvious that we use vague sentences often. When you told your mom you wanted bread and didn’t specify what type of bread you wanted, you left it up to her to interpret what you want and the kind of bread she got could possibly be or not be what you had in mind. I’m guilty of being vague about every task like that, with my mom and friends, basically anyone that I come across for the day. Learning about these vague sentences makes you more conscious of being more specific when it comes down to everyday conversations.
ReplyDeleteI had the same experience with my parents also. I assumed that they already know what I like and what I don't like since they raised me my whole entire life. I often fall in the habit of telling them things in vague sentences simply because I don't feel like talking. They ask me, "how was my day?" "Fine mom..." It sounds like I'm a terrible son but that's just how things are sometimes. I can't help it, I just feel very "vague" i guess sometimes and I don't want to express myself fully. I am trying to change that bad habit and be a more "expressive" son.
